There's a spot in Highland Park that most of Rochester drives right past, and it looks like it was airlifted in from a European courtyard. The Sunken Garden at Warner Castle is one of my favorite places to shoot, period — stone staircases, arched walls, and terraces dripping with greenery that change completely with the seasons.

What Makes It Work

  • Stone Staircases & Arched Walls — architectural details that give portraits real depth and structure.
  • Terraced Greenery — ivy-framed corners for intimate, close-up shots.
  • Seasonal Transformation — lilacs in spring, gold stone in fall, and a quiet hush of snow in winter mean no two sessions here ever look the same.

Who It's Best For

I've shot senior portraits, engagements, family sessions, and branding photos in this garden, and it delivers every time. It's built for both intimate, ivy-framed close-ups and wide architectural shots, which makes it one of the more flexible locations on this list.

Planning Your Session

  • Book early. This spot books up fast on weekends, so if you have a date in mind, let's grab it.
  • Golden hour helps. Warm evening light plays beautifully off the stone.
  • Comfortable shoes recommended. There are stone steps throughout the garden.
  • Think about the season. The look of this location changes dramatically depending on when you visit.
